Difficulty rating
Difficult (L4)
Prerequisites
1. Hiking boots/shoes or trail runners (no sneakers) 2. Physical fitness for a trip of this length and elevation gain 3. Some experience either with rock scrambles while hiking or with rock climbing

We’re headed to North and South Kinsman for some nice viewpoints, a lovely (and lonesome) lake, and some (hopefully not too slippery) ladders and scrambles! This is a 10 mi hike with 3.2k ft elevation gain — this is a challenging hike due to the length, elevation, and some steep scrambly bits.

Route:

We will take Lonesome Lake trail to ascend to Lonesome Lake and stop at the Lonesome Lake hut before taking Fishin Jimmy trail to Kinsman Pond. From there, we’ll head up to N Kinsman and then to S Kinsman, including the scenic spur just beyond the summit of S Kinsman! You can view an AllTrails listing here. Note that this route will include some significant steep rock scrambling, ladders, and walking on (likely) wet rocks. If you are not comfortable with a hike of this nature, it might not be the best fit for you.

Logistics:

We plan to leave Cambridge early Sunday morning (~5:30AM). If you can drive your own car or are willing to rent, please be sure to edit your MITOC profile to show this. There will be a mandatory pretrip meeting at 7pm on Thursday (July 18) on the 5th floor of W20 near the elevators (one floor above the MITOC office).

Costs:

Please budget for: $30-50 carpooling costs, any personal gear rentals, and any food you buy along the way. We intend to use the MIT car cost calculator and share costs equally among participants.

Sign ups are first come first serve but attendance is at leader discretion. If we feel the trip may not be a good fit, we may ask you to drop. If you have questions about the trip or whether it’s a good fit for you, please email the trip leaders!

We may be able to take additional participants, depending. If this trip shows as full and you are interested, please join the waitlist!
