Prerequisites
Self-sufficient climber and ability to perform intense physical labor

We are collaborating with Access Fund to perform trail work at Rumney on Saturday, July 13th. Come to gain some positive karma by helping with a trail work day. As repayment for your physical labor, we'll run an official climbing trip the other day.

Rumney is an amazing resource for Boston-area climbers -- let's do our part to keep it sustainable!

Pre-trip Meeting: Thursday, July 11, 7-9 pm at MITOC Office at Stratton Student Center, Room # 461 (W20-461). The meeting may go longer as participants will be required to demonstrate the technique of cleaning the anchors. You can leave as soon as you are done demonstrating the anchor cleaning technique.

Schedule:

  • Saturday morning: carpool up to Rumney. Meet at the main parking lot at 8.45 am
  • Saturday: trail work until 3 pm, swimming at the Baker River after the trail work
  • Saturday night: hang out, camp & dinner at Camelot
  • Sunday: climb!
  • Sunday late afternoon: drive home

Requirements for Trail Work:

  • Sign the Access Fund waiver
  • Appropriate clothing: Wear a climbing helmet at all times and no open-toed shoes. Long pants are strongly recommended. Access Fund will provide us with safety goggles and gloves, but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them.
  • Comfortable with performing tasks involving intense physical labor - moving big rocks and lumber, breaking big rocks with a hammer, moving a pile of stones, building platforms, etc.

Prerequisites for Climbing Trip:

  • The trip is aimed at self-sufficient climbers. You will be allowed to lead climb, lead belay, and clean the anchors only after leaders give you the go-ahead based on either (a) your past involvement in MITOC climbing trips and/or (b) after they verify your techniques. You do NOT need to be a 5.hard climber.
  • You are still encouraged to sign up if you do not know how to lead climb or lead belay. However, you should know how to do a top-rope belay. We will cover how to clean anchors at Rumney (quick clips and Ram's horns) at the pre-trip meeting. If you have questions about whether this trip is a good fit for you, please email the trip leaders.
  • Have your own gear or rent the gear from MITOC during office hours. MITOC has harnesses, climbing helmets, and grigris available for rent.

Required Gear for Climbing:

  1. Harness
  2. Climbing helmet
  3. Climbing shoes
  4. Chalk and a chalk bag
  5. Double-length sewn sling or a PAS system
  6. A couple of locking carabiners
  7. Assisted-braking belay device such as Grigri

Rain Plans:

  • Trail work will happen rain or shine on Saturday
  • We may have to call off the official climbing trip if it rains on Sunday. However, leaders and participants are encouraged to climb on their own at other nearby crags if it rains at Rumney.

Trip costs:

  • $10 for Saturday night dinner at Camelot. Please pay here. Choose the "Sport Climbing Trip Fee" from the drop-down menu in the Trip and Event Fees section. Fees cannot be reimbursed after you pay.
  • Please note that drivers are using gas and putting wear and tear on their cars, so please still expect to pay drivers if you are getting a ride. This can be up to ~$30-40 roundtrip, depending on the driver/car/passengers. If this cost is a barrier to joining, please get in touch with climbing-chair@mit.edu.
