Prerequisites
Fitness to hike about 12 miles / 4000 feet per day two days in a row. Psyched to be outside in wet, muddy, hot weather :)

We're going on an ambitious, mystery backpacking trip! We will leave either late Friday afternoon 6/5, or early Saturday morning 6/6 and return Sunday 6/7, somewhat weather dependent. If the weather is nice, we're going to be ticking off a bunch of Terrifying 25 trails in the Presidential Range. If the weather is rainy, we may cancel or we may head farther north and do part or all of the Kilkeny Ridge Traverse.

Routes: Option 1) If the weather is nice, we'll take the following route:

  • Friday (optional, may combine with Saturday) - ~3 miles, 1200+ ft to our camp for the weekend. Overnight gear can be left here and we can use day packs for the summits.
  • Saturday - 9-12miles, 3900ft, We'll take the Great Gulf trail (T25) up to Mt Washington (NH48), optionally visit the AMC hut at lake of the clouds, then tag Clay, and decent via Sphinx Trail (T25) back to camp
  • Saturday - 11 mi 4300ft+ 5300ft-. Route follows the upper part of Madison Gulf Trail (T25) to Madison hut, the summit of Madison (NH48), and the summit of Adams (NH48) and then descends via Buttress trail back to our camp to collect gear, then we'll take the lower section of Great Gulf Trail back to our parking lot.

Our camp is along the great gulf river which offers some nice spots to dip in the water.

Option 2 if there's rain we may choose to do the route here:

  • Saturday - 7.5mi, 3000ft+ N->S along the ridge, to Unknown pond tent site.
  • Sunday - 15.6mi, 5100ft+ 6800ft- continuing along the ridge tagging the Horn(52WAV), the Bulge, Mt Cabbot (NH48), Mt Weeks, South Weeks, and Waumbek (NH48)

Because of the trail difficulty, and pack weight with overnight gear, we recommend this trip for folks who are very strong hikers, and have some backpacking or overnight experience. If you've never done an overnight but are psyched to try, shoot us an email! We'll have a pre-trip meeting Tuesday at 6PM before the trip to go over group gear, finalize logistics, and help people get outfitted with rental gear.

More details to come in the next few days, sign up now if you're interested! Email the leaders with any questions. We'll add more spots if there's interest and if another driver signs up.

Trip costs: personal food including dehydrated meals for both nights, reimbursement for drivers (will vary depending on how many people we have per car, but plan on ~$40 total) and any rental gear costs to MITOC. We will try to keep costs to a minimum, and assistance is available for any undergrads!
