School of Rock: Lead Belaying and Climbing

Join us on Sunday, October 2nd at Rumney to learn/practice how to lead belay and lead climb.

This course is designed for those who have never done any lead climbing/belaying or are not confident doing so and want some practice. If you are in the beginner track and feel confident climbing top-rope, falling on top-rope and cleaning anchors or if you are in the advanced track then this course is absolutely appropriate for you. I am reluctant to set a climbing grade requirement for this course. You can safely lead climb at any grade so long as you know the systems and are confident top-roping at your grade.

Prerequisites

  • Know how to top-rope climb confidently (are you willing to fall on top-rope?)
  • Know how to tie into a harness with a figure-8 knot
  • Know how to safely lead climb
  • Know how to safely clean a sport anchor

SoR Requirements

  • Attended 1.02: Top Rope Practical (Or have equivalent experience outside of SoR)
  • Attended 2.00: Cleaning Sport Anchors (Or have equivalent experience outside of SoR)

Details

  • We will drive up to Rumney either Sat (10/01) night (and stay at the cabin) or early Sunday (10/02), depending on what folks prefer.
  • We will work in small groups learning safe lead belaying and climbing skills all day at Rumney prior to driving back to Boston Sun night.
  • I will send out a ride-share on Thursday.

Required Equipment

  • Helmet
  • Harness
  • Climbing Shoes
  • Head Lamp
  • Chalk Bag (Highly Recommended)
  • Quick Draws (If you have them)
  • Other typical hiking/overnight gear.

If you require any of the above equipment, you can rent it from MITOC. The office hours are on the calendar. http://mitoc.mit.edu/

Contingency Plan

If we get completely rained out, we will meet at the MITOC office and talk about the skills required to lead climb and practice them as best we possibly can.
