Come hike New England's tallest peak in the dead of winter!
We will get an early start start Saturday morning to attempt an ambitious loop. We will hike up Lion's Head trail to Mt. Washington, head down to Lake of the Clouds, summit Monroe (out and back), and finally descend Boott Spur trail. If we manage to complete the whole loop, this will be 10 miles with 5000 feet of elevation gain and nearly 6 miles above treeline.
You absolutely need previous above treeline winter hiking experience to sign up for this trip. In particular, you should be very comfortable with:
- Using crampons on steep terrain (a section of the trail is very steep)
- Full face covering, including goggles
You also need to be in a good shape and able to hike at a good and sustained pace, taking few and efficient breaks.
Finally, you must either be willing to wake up extremely early to drive up from Boston Saturday morning or able to drive up Friday evening and spend the night at a MITOC cabin. We'll meet at Pinkham Notch by 7:30am.
