Do you sometimes feel too stuck in your rigid routine? Have you alpine skied, but just feel too constrained to fully express yourself? Are your heels, and your mind begging to be free?

Come join us at Tenney Mountain for an introduction to telemark touring! Telemark skiing is an ancient form of skiing, steeped in mysticism and tie dye, where unlike alpine skis, your heel is free for you to dance down the mountain. This trip will be both an introduction to telemark skiing, and an introduction to backcountry ski touring. We will be going to Tenney Mountain to earn our turns (read: ski uphill) and learn about how backcountry touring equipment (e.g. skins) work. We'll skin a few laps to our hearts content, learning telemark ski skills on the way down, then take advantage of the prime benefit of Tenney's uphill pass*: free lift rides! This will let us get some more laps in to get our tele skills dialed until we're as good as the Norwegians pictured below.

Our goal

* Note that an uphill pass from Tenney will cost $45, in addition to the $20 MITOC trip fee. Reach out to the Winter School chairs if cost is an issue and you're an undergrad. We can help with the trip fee and gas but not the uphill pass fee.

Notes

1) What is your downhill skiing experience? 2) What is your telemark skiing experience? 3) Do you need to rent MITOC gear (we have a fleet of telemark skis and boots)? 4) What shape best evokes telemark skiing?
