Previous cross country skiing experience (doesn't need to be a lot); decent fitness

We will go cross country skiing on an ungroomed trail in the wilderness. This is a small step up in difficulty from cross country skiing at a groomed resort, due to the variable snow conditions. You should have previous cross country skiing experience in order to sign up for this trip. We won't go on anything too steep, but there will be areas where you'll need to use a snowplow (wedge) technique to control your speed. And, of course, we'll need to use winter school techniques to keep ourselves warm and happy in the backcountry! Very cold weather conditions are expected this weekend.

Our current plan is to head to the Lincoln Woods trail to Franconia Brook, but this may be adjusted to a different location in the White Mountains based on snow conditions over the next 1-2 days. We will ski out for a planned amount of time and then turn around and ski back.

We are planning an early start, heading out on the trail before 7:45am. This means you must leave Boston around 5am, plus or minus a few minutes depending whether you'll make a stop. We will also open MITOC's Camelot cabin for anyone who is interested in staying over on Friday night before the trip, to shorten the Saturday morning drive.

Everyone on this trip must have classic-style cross country skis and poles. Metal edges are recommended (most of the MITOC skis have metal edges). You can rent skis from MITOC but you cannot rent them on the way or at the trailhead.
