There's a reason Welch-Dickey is the most popular MITOC Winter School hike — it's a great introduction to winter hiking, with amazing views, and some fun activities like glissading!

We're prioritizing MIT students for this hike. This trip is only open to MIT students (undergrads and grad students) during the lottery period. Those who are not MIT students are welcome to sign up after Wednesday at 12pm after the lottery has run — there may still be spots open.

We're running two parallel trips (hiking in opposite directions)! If you enter the lottery for this trip, you should also enter the lottery for the other one: https://mitoc-trips.mit.edu/trips/2281/.

Join us on this scenic hike of the Welch-Dickey loop, one of the 52 with a view with outstanding views. This is a great hike for getting your feet wet (figuratively, not literally) in winter hiking.

This trip is ideal for people with some 3-season hiking experience (recommended, but not required) who want to practice winter hiking skills (layering, traction, eating/drinking). We'll also try to get some practice with butt-sliding: we'll bring a couple sleds and try to slide down some sections of the trail (super fun, but optional).

This hike is ~4.4 mi with 1800 ft of elevation gain (route info). We'll be hiking at an easy pace.

Prerequisites

Have you done a hike that's ≥ 4 mi and ≥ 800 ft of gain in the last year? If so, you're good to go! If not, that's fine too, but please email the leaders and briefly describe your hiking experience (if any) and workout routine (if any). This trip is open to all, but we do want to have a general sense of everyone's fitness level to make sure it's a good experience for everybody.

Logistics

There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting at 6:00pm on Thursday to review gear and logistics. We'll send details by email after the lottery runs.

We will need a couple drivers for this trip! Please update your car status if you can drive (put "willing to rent" if you can rent — MIT provides discounted car rental, and we'll evenly split rental/gas costs).
