We're headed to Waitts mountain in malden for an afternoon/evening of skill building around climbing outside for climbers who are NEW-ish (meaning can you count the number of times on your fingers?!) to climbing outside. We will be top roping the easiest and shortest climbs we can find. We will discuss various styles of top rope anchors and top rope belaying outside, and show you how to find places where you can toprope for your own future adventures.

This trip will require getting to the park at 6:00 PM on a Wednesday - a rideshare will be organized, but make sure you can leave for the trip around 5:15. This is to reduce the amount of time we will be climbing in the dark.

Prerequisites (which you must know before the trip):

  • How to tie a figure 8 knot
  • How to belay with an assisted braking device (i.e. a grigri, megajul, pilot, smart alpine, etc.)
  • you should own or borrow your own climbing shoes for the trip

Required equipment:

  • helmet (rentable)
  • harness (rentable)
  • headlamp (not rentable)
  • shoes (not rentable)

It is fall (brrrrrrrrrr), so plan accordingly with respect to clothing.

Notes

1) what is your experience with climbing? 2) can you tie a figure 8? 3) have you used a grigri, megajul, or pilot? which do you feel most spiritually connected with? 4) do you have all the required gear?
