Description
We'll drive to Walden Pond (Concord, MA) on Thursday evening to swim! Walden pond is a beautiful place to swim in open waters in a natural body of water, together with real beaches (cough cough, New England beaches). The philosopher Henry Thoreau once spent a long time on the shores of the pond.
Itinerary
We'll leave Cambridge on Thu Sep 14th at 5pm to get there by 5:45. We'll swim starting 6 in the pond in an open fashion based on everyone's comfort level with open-water swimming. We'll wrap up by 7 and drive back at 7:15 to be back to campus by 8. Daylight on Sep 14th is 6:22 am - 6:56 pm. The Walden pond park closes 30 minutes after sunset.
What you'll need
- Ability to swim and experience swimming: non-negotiable. You must comfortably be able to tread water and stay afloat. If it helps, you are welcome to bring flotation devices (not provided). Note that Walden pond lifeguards do not attend to open-water swimmers. If you feel more comfortable swimming in designated lifeguard-supported areas, you are totally welcome to do that instead!
- A swimsuit, towel, and a change of clothes. Walden pond park has restrooms where you can change.
- A snack and water to replenish post-swim
Costs
Expect to chip in ~$10 towards parking costs and gas for the drivers.
Rain date
Friday Sep 15, in case weather is unfavorable on Thu.
Contact the leaders with any questions!
