Join us on a day hike up the highest mountain in New England, via the second most difficult trail to the summit! The Great Gulf Trail is one of the Terrifying 25 trails, because it ends with a steep hike up the headwall over loose talus. It is also a remote and scenic route through the wilderness crossing several streams and suspension footbridges and passing many other features: Boulder Falls, The Bluff, Clam Rock, Weetamoo Cascade, and Spaulding Lake. The summit area is all above treeline, with superb views (if it's not in the clouds). After reaching the summit, we'll descend via the Tuckerman Ravine Trail, the most popular route on the mountain. Hike the mountain now, before the snow and ice come!

Route: 12 miles, 5000 ft. elevation gain, with steep scrambling requiring use of hands. Map. See also this video.

We'll leave Cambridge around 5am so that we can hike at a comfortable pace. And we'll stop for breakfast along the way.

Our plan is to hike on Monday, September 4 (Labor Day), but weather may force us to modify or cancel the hike; in particular, we might hike on Saturday or Sunday instead. We'll have a short pre-trip meeting on zoom Friday, September 1 at 7:00pm to finalize plans.

If you can drive your own car or are willing to drive a rental car, edit the lottery preferences on your MITOC profile to show this.
