Rumney Ruckus is an endurance climbing competition based on a day of climbing at Rumney, one of the premier sport climbing destinations in the country. Inspired by the infamous Horseshoe Hell competition, teams of two will compete to accrue as many points as possible in 12 hours by climbing all the schist your heart desires. Rumney Ruckus is a fundraiser for the Camelot bunkhouse project and the Rumney Climber's Association!

This year, we are excited to be sponsored by:

  • FrictionLabs
  • Central Rock Gym
  • Boston Bouldering Project

Signups and Lottery

You need a MITOC Trips account (ie login for this website) and signed waiver to participate. You can create a MITOC Trips account at https://mitoc-trips.mit.edu/accounts/signup/. We are not requiring a paid membership for this event (though if you think you'd use our gear rentals, stay at our cabins, join winter school trips, or use member discounts you should get a membership)!

If we have 60+ signups, the lottery will run on Friday, 9/22 at 5pm EST to randomly select the field to 60 (30 pairs). Make sure you have selected a partner and updated your participant pairing preferences so that you and your partner don't get split! We'll send out final fee and fundraising info to all competitors after the lottery runs. If we have <60 signups, we'll continue to take signups on a first-come, first-served basis until we fill up.

Requirements:

  • All participants must be self-sufficient sport climbers. That means you must be able to lead climb, lead belay, and clean anchors, as you’ll be doing these things all day! The actual day of climbing is self-organized - the climbing itself is NOT an official MITOC trip.
  • You must have the required gear - MITOC will not be providing ropes, draws, or other gear.
  • You must have a signed waiver.
  • You must have a partner. If you don't have one in mind, here is a spreadsheet folks can use to find partners. Please cross yourself off, remove yourself, etc if you are no longer looking.
  • Before signing up, please adjust your Trips site lottery preferences and specify the partner you will be climbing with under “Lottery Pairing.”

Cost

Rumney Ruckus is a fundraising event. The suggested minimum entry donation is $50, and we encourage you fundraise an additional suggested $100 (no upper bound on how much you can fundraise!). All fundraising proceeds can go either to the bunkhouse project or the RCA (you can choose which), although we encourage donating at least the minimum $50 to Camelot as MITOC is covering event costs. More details on how to donate after signups are finalized.

Participants will receive:

  • Free camping at Camelot both nights
  • Snacks and Gatorade
  • Eligible to enter climbing scorecards to win prizes!
  • Saturday night dinner

Volunteers

If you don't want to climb but would like to hang out with climbers and help (ex: cook dinner for Saturday night) we could use volunteers to make this event run smoothly! Fill out the interest form

Rules and Climber's Checklist

This is subject to change, but the general scoring setup, rules, and a packing checklist from last year are outlined here.

Divisions

There will either be 2 or 3 divisions depending on signups. Let us know your hardest outdoor redpoint in the past 3 years to determine your division. If team members fall into different divisions, team awards are based on the max team member division, but individual prizes are based on individual divisions.

If there are 2 divisions, the tentative cutoffs are:

  • Intermediate <= 5.10d
  • Advanced" >= 5.11a

If there are 3 divisions, the tentative cutoffs are:

  • Beginner <= 5.9
  • Intermediate >= 5.10a, <= 5.11d
  • Advanced >= 5.12a

To score in your division, you cannot climb harder than the max grade of your division (ie in the "Beginner" division you cannot climb a 5.10a for points).
