We will be running a glacier travel and crevasse rescue course with Synnott Mountain Guides this year! You should take this course if you are a skier, climber, mountaineer, or winter hiker that wants to spend time in glaciated terrain.

When: Saturday and Sunday March 11 and 12.

Where: Mount Washington Valley area (meeting at Synnott Mountain Guides in North Conway, NH)

What: This course will cover the basic of travel in glacier terrain, including:

  • Evaluating terrain
  • How to travel in roped teams
  • Hauling with a rope (to haul someone out of a crevasse)
  • Ascending the rope (if you were to fall into a crevasse)
  • Building snow and ice anchors
  • Scenarios with ‘rescuing’ someone on a roped team

We'll spend almost all of our time outside so you’ll get plenty of hands on practice. You must have winter hiking experience and bring all appropriate gear / clothing to spend a full day outside in winter conditions.

You'll need winter hiking boots, crampons, an ice axe, a harness, and a helmet (all of which can be rented from MITOC). Any other equipment you may have (carabiners, slings, cordelettes, prussiks, belay device) will be great as well! You should be willing to review and practice some basic knots beforehand (figure eight, alpine butterfly, double fishermans, clove hitch, friction hitch).

Cost: The cost of this course will be $225 per person. I will contact you with payment information after the trip signup period. Your spot in the course will not be confirmed until your payment is received. You may be eligible for a leader subsidy if you are an active leader.

Logistics: We will share a rideshare spreadsheet closer to the course date. Staying at the Intervale cabin Saturday night (and Friday night depending on cars) may also be an option.

Please reach out to me if you are unsure if this course is a good fit for you!
