FAQ

  • What is Winter School? Every IAP (i.e. January) MITOC runs a huge hiking, ice climbing, skiing, and other winter activity program. There’ll be lectures every Tuesday and Thursday and tons of trips every weekend. As a leader or participant you can do as much or as little as you like, but you will need to attend safety/intro lectures January 10th and 12th (so put those on your calendar!)
  • Why do I want to be a MITOC leader? Participating in Winter School is awesome, but being a leader is even better! You’ll meet other outdoorsy students at leader training and the leader trip planning socials. You’ll be able to plan as many trips as you want and will get a bump in the lottery to get on trips other leaders are running. And we’ll work with you to keep developing your leadership and outdoors skills!
  • Can I apply just to lead the easier trips? Yes! You don’t have to be interested in or experienced enough to lead our hardest trips to become a leader. We’ll give you a safety rating based on what trips you’re qualified to lead and have you lead your first two trips with a more experienced leader. And then, if you’re interested, we’ll work with you to get you on more advanced trips as a participant and then as a leader!
  • What if I can't make it? You don't need to make the info session to apply to be a leader and can always email Winter Safety Committee (mitoc-wsc@mit.edu) with any questions about applying to be a MITOC winter leader.
