You might have heard of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains, a range of mountains named after US presidents, and maybe you've even started bagging all these peaks. But that's not all the White Mountains have to offer! To the East of the Presidential Range, there's a valley through which Route NH 16 runs, and East of that valley, there is, guess what, yet another mountain ridge with 4000-footers! It's called the Carter Ridge, and its northernmost peak is Mt. Moriah, 4,049 ft, and that's where we're headed this time. There are multiple views in different directions, west to the Presidential Range, south to the Carter Range, and east to the Wild River Wilderness, along the hike and at the summit!
We will use the Stony Brook Trail followed by part of the Carter-Moriah trail, which results in a hike of about 10 miles and 3100 ft. of elevation gain. The trail crosses a few brooks, without bridges, but enough rocks to cross by hopping from rock to rock. There is a steep scramble near the top. We're planning on going at a comfortable pace throughout the hike.
We're planning to leave Cambridge at 6:00am on Sun Oct 31 and start driving back before sunset.
We're hosting a required pre-trip meeting on Thursday at 8pm via zoom (link will follow).
