Prerequisites
Beginners welcome, but you need to have gone on at least one previous winter hike, practiced layering, and be in good enough shape for a non-winter 4.5 mile hike. Hike includes short but steep uphill and downhill sections, and scrambling over some rocks.

Are you new to winter hiking, but feel ready to take your skills to the next level? Want to try using 10-point crampons and ice axes to walk up ice sheets? Practice self-arresting?

...Join three highly experienced MITOC leaders on this exciting beginner trip!

We will be hiking the Welch-Dickey Loop, perhaps the most exciting and beautiful trail in the White Mountains that is also great for beginner winter hikers! The trail forms a 4.5 mile long loop with 1650 feet of elevation gain and features multiple great views, steep slabs of exposed ice and rock, beautiful pine forests, and two summits!

This will be a relaxed pace trip during which we will be learning how to using 10-point crampons and mountaineering ice axes for hiking over ice slabs and ledges more commonly found above treeline and at higher altitudes. We will also be practicing self-arrest techniques, as well as working on the following skills

  • Laying and delayering
  • Using microspike
  • Peeing in the woods
  • Taping up blisters or hot spots
  • … We're also happy to cover any other basic skills folks are interested in! Let us know in advance if there's something you'd like to practice.
