We'll be heading up to beautiful Kinsman Pond for an overnight adventure Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. A great chance to learn to master winter camping skills and hopefully snowshoe in fresh snow!
This is a moderate hike -- 3.5 miles on Saturday, 2,000 elevation gain; 6.1 miles on Sunday, 500 feet up and 2,500 feet down.
Here's the plan: Leave Boston at 7 a.m. Saturday and head to Lafayette Campground. Hike 1.5 miles to the Lonesome Lake Hut, a great spot to make gear changes if need be. Continue 2 miles to the Kinsman Pond Shelter, where we'll make camp, cook dinner, trade stories and rejoice.
We'll sleep in tents or in the shelter, which is unheated and has a nearby toilet. The forecast is COLD, with a low of 7 F overnight.
Sunday morning, we may wake up in a winter wonderland (4-6 inches of snow expected!) tromp 1.3 miles up to North and South Kinsman peaks if we feel like it, then retrace our steps back to the car.
Prerequisites: - some winter hiking in cold weather - previous camping experience - enthusiasm for learning new winter overnight skills
