What's WFA? Wilderness First Aid is a two-day introduction to general medical concepts and basic life support skills. The course is being offered by Wilderness Medical Associates.
When/Where is it? November 16 - 17, 2019. (Saturday and Sunday). 8AM - 6PM on both days. MIT campus, room 1-190 and 1-242. You MUST have 100% attendance on both days to receive your certification.
What's covered? Patient Assessment System; CPR; Circulatory System; Nervous System; Respiratory System; Fractures, Stable Injuries; Splints 1-Extremities; Hypothermia; Hyperthermia and Heat Illness; Near Drowning; Lightning Injuries; Wounds and Burns; Anaphylaxis; Lifting, Moving Extrication; Patient Carries; Backcountry Medicine.
Certifications: Upon successful completion you will receive certification in Wilderness First Aid and Adult CPR. The certification is valid for 3 years.
Cost: The course costs $200 to participants, although we’re offering a subsidized cost of $100. WFA course participants can qualify for the subsidy if they apply for and are accepted as a Winter School Leader, AND they lead/co-lead at least TWO Winter School trips this January.
You can also qualify for the subsidy if you are a leader of another sort (e.g. paddle, 3-season hiking, climbing, biking, etc) and have led at least two trips in the past six months (but have not counted them towards another subsidy). If you plan on leading trips post winter school, pay the full amount now and request a reimbursement after you have led those trips. Email amykchen@mit.edu with questions or if you would like a subsidy based on previously led trips (include in your email which trips you led and the dates of those trips).
If you are unable to attend the MITOC WFA dates, but would like to attend another course and apply the subsidy towards that one, this is an option. (Email Amy!)
Winter School! Winter is coming, and I'm sure everyone is thinking (and SUPER STOKED) about Winter School 2020! If you are interested in becoming a full Winter School Leader, you are required to have a valid WFA.
Deadline Sign up and payment deadline is Friday, November 1 2019. Note: Your spot in the course will not be confirmed unless your payment is received. Space is limited, sign up and pay today! and EMAIL ME YOUR RECEIPT! If there are more than 36 people who are ready to commit and pay, the course will be expanded to 48 if and only if we have 48 to meet the student:instructor ratio and keep this cost! There will be no refunds for inability to attend the course unless you find someone who is not already signed up to take your spot.
How to pay Please pay by credit card online. Go to http://mitoc.mit.edu/#pay Under "Trip and Event Fees" select either WFA (full) or WFA (subsidized). If paying the subsidized amount, you must also write a check for $100 (made out to MITOC, write "WFA" in the comments section). Please bring the check to MITOC office hours and tell the deskworker that it is for WFA. Your check will not be cashed unless you fail to meet our requirements to receive the subsidy (lead 2 trips). You will be notified if this is the case.
You will need to register for the course on the online course site, so watch your email for information about that after you've paid.
Please feel free to email amykchen@mit.edu with any other questions.
