Prerequisites
Strong swimming ability, previous paddle experience, ability to demonstrate a safe wet exit (will practice together)

This overnight trip August 10-11 to Peddocks Island is for paddlers with previous kayak experience who are interested in developing their navigation and expedition skills on coastal waters.

Combined with the mandatory pre-trip session on Wednesday, August 7, participants will learn and demonstrate the ability to “wet exit,” (a simple escape from an overturned boat) plus basic rescue procedures. Skills practiced will include water navigation with charts and compass, necessary strokes to effectively pilot a kayak, proper rescue techniques, group travel strategies, and island camp craft.

Based on conditions and group ability, there will be additional paddling to other Harbor Islands and opportunities to learn about the marine environment. Participants can anticipate 2-6 miles of paddling each day in variable conditions. Composting toilets, potable water, and well-maintained campsites are available on Peddocks and driftwood campfires are allowed below the high tide line.

Cost for this trip will be ~$30 ($15 trip fee includes necessary boating equipment; food and camping fees will be determined soon). Contact Steph if that expense is prohibitive to your participation.

Space in boats is limited so meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch) will be coordinated by leaders. Participants should plan to bring their own snacks.

The pre-trip session on Wed., August 7 will leave from the MITOC boathouse at 5:30 p.m. The trip will depart from the MITOC boathouse at 6 a.m. on Sat., August 10 and the trip will conclude after cleaning/storing equipment ~9 p.m. on Sun., August. 11.

The trip lottery will run Aug. 2 at 12 p.m. and trip participants will receive more info by Sunday, Aug. 4.
