UPDATE: Some folks may head up Friday night. We will discuss cars tomorrow night at 6:30pm before lecture in the pre-trip meeting. Meeting room is changed from this past Tuesday, see MITOC emails for updates!

Two days. Two hikes. One overnight stay at Camelot. One trip. One group. Warm beds (ok sleeping pads). Board games. Wood stove. Adventure.

Come join your leaders Rob, Meghan, and Neil on a full-weekend trip, consisting of two day-hikes linked together by an overnight in the cabin of Camelot (or the lean-to if you're hardy!). The same three leaders and seven participants will be on both trips and staying at Camelot - allowing us to tackle different kinds of hikes, play board games and sleep at Camelot, enjoy delicious food at the cabin or in Lincoln NH, all while keeping car logistics easy. Agreeing to this trip puts you on BOTH of our trips, Saturday Mt Wolf and Sunday Mt Kancamagus, including the departure time of 5am from Boston on Saturday and a return Sunday evening.

Saturday morning at 5am we will leave Boston (some may leave in a car the night before) and drive up to White Mountain Bagel in Lincoln NH by 7:15am. We will then drive West on Lost River Road (NH-112) to the trailhead of Mount Wolf on the Appalachian Trail. Mount Wolf features a steep climb up onto the forested ridge at the beginning of the hike, and then a wonderful woodsy ridgeline hike with occasional views on the way to the summit. Estimated 6.6 mile round trip distance, estimated 1,500 feet of elevation gain overall. Headlamps of course are a must, especially as we may hike the final portion in the dark. Traction required (microspikes or crampons), poles and/or ice axe encouraged. Mt. Wolf is sometimes tough to find the precise summit, so bring your dead reckoning.

Sunday morning we will wake up at the leisurely hour of 7:00 or 7:30 at Camelot. We will again find breakfast and warm water for our Nalgenes in Lincoln, before heading East on the Kancamagus Highway (NH-112) to the trailhead for our bushwhack hike to summit the famed Kancamagus Mountain. No trail leads to this desolate and foreboding (ok, more like close-by and inviting) peak, and so we will be traveling using only map, compass, landmarks, and our wits to find it. We will be practicing the usual pacing, layering/delayering, happiness triangle, as well as bringing our navigation and Leave No Trace ethics to the forefront. Our hike may end up as short as four miles or as long as eight, with an estimated elevation gain of 1,600 feet. Snow shoes will probably be rented by around half the group to help break trail.

Please bring extra food, tasty beverages, and board games for Camelot Saturday night! Word has already spread throughout the realm, and other groups may be anticipating our fun and meeting us there. Reminder: You MUST commit to both days of this overnight trip to participate.

Notes

1) Do you have a car? How many passengers (not including driver)? 2) Are you able to leave from the MIT Student Center on Mass Ave at 5am on Saturday? (ok if not) 3) If not, do you prefer another departure location in the Boston area? 4) Can you bring a board game to share for Saturday night!?
