With Synnott Mountain Guides, we will be hosting a course on Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue.

When: This course will take place from 08:00am-05:00pm on Saturday and Sunday Apr 6 & 7.

Where: This course will take place at Synnott Mountain Guides in North Conway, NH and practicals will be in the Pinkham Notch area.

What: This course will covers the basic of travel in glacier terrain, including:

  • Evaluating terrain
  • How to travel in roped teams
  • Hauling with a rope (to haul someone out of a crevasse)
  • Ascending the rope (if you were to fall into a crevasse)
  • Building snow and ice anchors
  • Scenarios with ‘rescuing’ someone on a roped team

You should take this course if you are a skier, climber, mountaineer, or winter hiker that wants to spend time in glaciated terrain. You will spend part of your time in lectures indoors, but most of your time will be outside doing practicals. This will involve winter hiking. You must bring all appropriate gear and clothing to move in winter conditions to participate in this trip. It will be better if you also have your own harness, prussiks, slings, and a belay device. Prussiks you can learn to make online. Other gear can be rented from MITOC.

Cost: The cost of this course will be ~$200 per person. I will contact you with payment information.

Logistics: ONLY SIGN UP FOR THIS TRIP IF YOU CAN COMMIT TO ATTENDING. Once the lottery runs, you must submit your payment within 3 days to hold your spot.

Given the tenuous situation with the Intervale cabin, additional logistics, like finding an Airbnb/motel or camping, may be required. This will have to be coordinated amongst the course participants.
