We'll be heading up to the great state of Vermont to ski and camp in the Big Jay Basin this weekend. Jay Peak is notorious for getting the most snow in the Northeast. We might have a bit of ice this weekend, so be prepared for some good old fashion New England skiing!!!

Trip Plans

  • Leave Boston Saturday afternoon to cook dinner at at MITOC's Camelot cabin.
  • Wake up early Sunday morning to drive to Jay.
  • Set up camp early.
  • Ski Sunday afternoon.
  • Fun evening camp and cooking Sunday night.
  • Ski Monday and then head back to Boston.

Who is this for?

This trip is for people who are pretty good skiers. You can comfortably ski black diamonds and enjoy skiing off-trail between trees.

Estimated Costs

  • $15 trip fee (covers trip expenses and ski rental gear only)
  • $$$ for group food
  • $7 to stay at Camelot
  • $$$ for your driver
  • NOTE: People with their own AT gear will still have to pay the trip fee.

About Backcountry Skiing

For those that are new to backcountry skiing you may not realize the following:

  • You will not get to “warm up on a green” and may have to start off on black-level (steeper) terrain.
  • Conditions are unknown and objective hazards (exposed rocks, bushes, etc.) may make runs narrower or more difficult than slope indicates. For instance, you may have to navigate a slope that has exposed rocks because of low snow coverage.
  • Skinning up is equal in difficulty to a strenuous hike (i.e. a continuously steep uphill climb) with the extra weight of skis on your feet, so good fitness is important
