Mount Major is a popular hiking destination at any time of year, and an excellent first hike during winter. The open summit features stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the remains of a stone structure built by George Phippen in 1925 as a shelter for hikers.
We'll hike up Mount Major and enjoy lunch at the summit in Mr. Phippen’s hut while taking in views of Lake Winnipesaukee.
This day hike features a variety of terrain with views both in and out of the trees, together with easy to moderate challenges, including rock scrambles near the summit and a few easy stream crossings, often frozen in winter. Hiking distance is just under 4 miles round trip with 1253 feet of elevation gain.
This hike will provide practice using light traction (Microspikes required), layering systems and other protective gear for winter hiking. This is a day trip that will carpool from and return to MIT on Sunday, January 14th. Itinerary details can be found here.
