What's WFA? Wilderness First Aid is a two-day introduction to general medical concepts and basic life support skills. The course is being offered by Wilderness Medical Associates.

When/Where is it? Nov. 19-20 on Saturday and Sunday. 8AM - 6PM on both days. 3-370 on 11/19 and 3-270 on 11/20

What's covered? Patient Assessment System; CPR; Circulatory System; Nervous System; Respiratory System; Fractures, Stable Injuries; Splints 1-Extremities; Hypothermia; Hyperthermia and Heat Illness; Near Drowning; Lightning Injuries; Wounds and Burns; Anaphylaxis; Lifting, Moving Extrication; Patient Carries; Backcountry Medicine.

Certifications: Upon successful completion you will receive certification in Wilderness First Aid and Adult CPR. The certification is valid for 3 years.

Costs: The cost is Subsidized $80 Unsubsidized $190. WFA course participants can qualify for the subsidy if they apply for and are accepted as a Winter School Leader, AND they lead/co-lead at least TWO Winter School trips this January. More information about winter school is coming soon!

You can also qualify for the subsidy if you are a leader of another sort (e.g. paddle, 3-season hiking, climbing, etc) and have led at least two trips (but have not counted them towards another subsidy). If you plan on leading trips post winter school, pay the full amount now and request a reimbursement after you have led those trips. Email millersa@mit.edu with questions or if you would like a subsidy based on previously led trips.

Winter School! As the fall is here, and bringing us closer to winter, I'm sure everyone is thinking (and SUPER EXCITED) about Winter School 2017! If you are interested in becoming a Winter School Leader, you are required to have a valid WFA.

Sign up and Payment Deadline for signup is Thursday 11/10/2016. Payment must be received by Wednesday 11/15/2016. Note: Your spot in the course will not be confirmed unless your payment is received.

In order to pay, you will be required to submit two checks: one for $80 and one for $110. Please bring the checks to MITOC office hours (calendar at mitoc.mit.edu) and tell the deskworker that they're for WFA. The deskworker will keep the checks in the safe until the $80 check is deposited and the $110 check is either shredded (in the case that you lead 2 winter school trips) or deposited. If you aren't planning on getting the course subsidized, you can just pay the $190 as a single check now.

Please feel free to email millersa@mit.edu with any questions.
