They say Abel Crawford was a wise old man who unlocked the White Mountains for the masses. It is written in ancient lore that in Crawford's final days, the little that remained of his fortune mysteriously disappeared with the wail of a wilderness banshee. Local rumors tell that the banshee's howl was so powerful, that it lifted the treasure and hid it atop the very mountain which bears Crawford's name. The gold has not been found to this day.

Join Ian and Will this Sunday as we attempt to uncover clues to this mystery during our trek to the summit of Mt. Crawford. As we hike, we will discuss the history of the White Mountains, including legends of those past and present who called the area their home. Our journey will begin at the beautiful Saco River, dotted with miniature ice floes reminiscent of Antarctica. The 2.5 mile hike to the summit will lead us through thick forest up nearly 2,100 feet from the valley floor below. If we have clear weather, the ridgeline atop the summit will offer us amazing 360-degree views of the surrounding Crawford Notch and Presidential Range, including Mt. Washington. This trip will provide ample opportunity to learn new winter hiking skills, including the use of microspikes.
