Prerequisites
Hiking boots or trail runners with grip (not sneakers). Previous experience with scrambling recommended. Comfortable with heights. Physical condition for a hike of this length and elevation gain.

We'll hike up Mt. Jefferson TWICE, from both sides of the Presidential Range! The planned route traverses three of the Terrifying 25 trails end-to-end,

  • Caps Ridge Trail: Fun scrambles in open air
  • Sphinx Trail: Descending a slippery brook bed with cascades
  • Six Husbands Trail: Boulder caves, challenging scrambles, and steep ladders,

and part of a fourth (Great Gulf Trail), with several stream crossings. The Six Husbands Trail in particular is one of the most difficult trails in the White Mountains, but it is also very rewarding, with magnificent views of the Great Gulf. And of course, Mt. Jefferson, the third highest mountain in New England, above treeline in the Presidential Range, has a spectacular 360-degree view of the White Mountains, featuring Mt. Washington only 2 miles away. (Bjorn will be celebrating completion of the 48 NH 4000-footers with this peak.)

If you have a fear of heights, do not sign up for this hike!

Route: 10.2 miles, 4900 ft. elevation gain, https://caltopo.com/m/K3KMT

There will be a pre-trip meeting Thursday August 11 at 8pm on Zoom.

The trip is currently planned for Sunday August 14, but weather might force us to shift a day earlier or later, or to reschedule completely, for safety. The plan would be to leave Cambridge very early in the morning to allow plenty of time. We'll hike at a comfortable pace.

If you can drive your own car or are willing to drive a rental car, edit the “Lottery preferences” on your MITOC profile to show this.
