We finally have some good snow…It’s time to go skiing! We have two trips going on Saturday, so you're not seeing double. The two trips will travel independently, but we'll probably bump into each other on the trail and at the lodge.

If you’re interested in trying telemarking, or already alpine/downhill ski and are ready to try AT (alpine touring) gear, this is a great place to go — below treeline, not too narrow trails with intermittent, manageable steeps. It’s also a really beautiful place to be in the snow? wooded and quiet with some stream crossings and an old rope ski pull which used to be run from what’s now a ruined Model A at the top.

We’re happy to help you troubleshoot your gear and technique if you’re new to backcountry skiing, but please be comfortable downhill skiing (e.g. comfortable black diamond skier). Cardigan also has hot water/cocoa in a heated lodge at the bottom, in the lodge, ‘cause it’s nice to be coddled sometimes.

Pre-trip meeting for this trip will be at 6pm on Thursday at the MITOC office so that we can sort out, test, and fit gear for everyone.

Trip plan: 5:30 am (possible Friday night departure depending on weather): Leave for Mt. Cardigan from MIT Student Center. 8:00 - 8:30 am: Arrive at Mt. Cardigan and gear up. 8:30 am - 4:00 pm: Skiing! We’ll take it at a comfortable pace, stopping for lunch and snacks/water breaks so that everyone is happy. 4:00 pm: Return to MIT Student Center by 7 pm (though one or more cars may stay at Camelot for Saturday adventures)

Notes

Trips this weekend will be gear limited. To help us maximize the number of people we can accommodate, please answer the following questions: 1. What backcountry ski gear (if any) do you currently own (skis, boots, climbing skins, poles, etc.)? What ski gear do you think you will you need to rent from MITOC? 2. What is your skiing ability? 3. Have you telemarked/are you willing to try? (you should be an expert downhill skier if you've never telemark skied before) 4. Do you have a car? If so, do you have snow tires, 4 wheel drive, and/or chains? How many passengers could you take? 5. Would you be able to leave for this trip on Friday evening if weather necessitates? 6. What is your cell number? (We may use this to get in touch on Saturday morning.)
