Prerequisites
experience with three-season hiking

We are heading up to Mount Waumbek via Starr King Trail and Killkenny Ridge Trail. The hike is ~7 miles with 2700 ft of elevation gain. We will pass Mount Starr King on the way, where we will see the remains of a stone fireplace from an old shelter. We will boil some water and make some hot beverages at the said fireplace! If the clouds are clear, we should be able to see Mount Washington from the summit of Mount Waumbek.

This will be a perfect hike for folks who have some experience with three-season hiking but are still relatively new to winter hiking. We will focus on practicing traction, (de)layering, and the triangle of happiness. We will leave Boston at 5 am.

  • As this weekend will be much colder than last weekend, please make sure you have enough warm clothes and waterproof winter boots. If needed, please review "Winter Clothing" and "Basic Gear/Essentials" from the first winter school lecture. We may need snowshoes.
