Prerequisites
Previous winter hiking experience and reasonably fit.

Join us for a long and cold day hiking the out-and-back Garfield Trail up to the summit of Mount Garfield (4500 ft). We'll be practicing layering in cold weather, the use of micro-spikes, as well as eating on the go and taking efficient breaks.

This will be a long hike! This is a 12.5 mile hike with 2960 ft elevation gain so you should be an experienced winter hiker with several long hikes under your belt. Overall, it is steep at the very end but otherwise a mild uphill. Be prepared for a long but rewarding day in the White Mountains! We'll share Garfield jokes at the top.

Gear: We'll definitely need micro-spikes and lots of warm layers. We will bring a couple pairs of snowshoes in case we need to break trail.

Logistics: The plan is to leave Boston very early on Sunday and we will have a required pre-trip meeting this Thursday after lecture.
