If the weather cooperates this weekend, we're heading to Mormon Hollow in Western MA to dust off the cobwebs and get back on ropes early in the season. Mormon Hollow is mostly known as a 5.12's crag, but we will target anything that's dry on the lower grades (5.8-5.11).

Sunday 4/7 @ 8:30 am - 8:00 pm.

Itinerary:

  • 8:30 am - Cars depart from Boston
  • 10:00 am - Arrive at Mormon Hollow (GPS: 42.569, -72.461)
  • 10:30 am - Climb all day
  • 6:00 pm - Pack-up and head out (though people can leave earlier if desired)
  • 8:00 pm - Arrive back in Boston (possibly this will be later if we eat dinner)

Pre-requisites:

  • You MUST be a proficient belayer for top-rope or lead. We could setup TR for you, or you could lead if you are comfortable leading
  • Comfortable climbing intermediate-advanced routes, or at least a willingness to try (simply because there may not be many beginner-friendly routes at this crag...)

Gear:

  • Helmet -- REQUIRED for all outdoor MITOC climbing trips
  • Harness, climbing shoes, chalk bag
  • Belay device (e.g., ATC, grigri, megajule, etc) with locking carabiner
  • Quick draws (if you plan to sport climb)
  • Lunch / snacks
  • Water
  • Headlamp
  • Wag bag
  • (optional) personal anchor system with locking carabiner (if you know how to clean routes but if not it's fine we can clean them)

Trip is dependent on weather conditions. Currently, we're hoping there's 24 hrs for the wet rock / grounds to dry, and Sun should be ~60F partly cloudy. [Forecast.] We'll monitor and finalize on Friday. Welcome to spring climbing!

PS Preference will be given to drivers since we need a way to get folks to the crag!

  1. Can you TR belay? (required) Can you lead belay? (not a pre-req)
  2. Climbing experience outdoors / what grades will you be willing to try?
  3. Do you have a rope and/or draws? If yes, what items? (not a pre-req)
  4. Do you have a car? If yes, how many passengers could you take? (not a pre-req but we may give priority since we will need another driver)
